Editing the ISDLS 25th Anniversary Wiki

February 2011

You cannot harm the wiki or any content on it.

Do not worry about causing problems with the wiki or deleting something important. The UTK Ask Me team can revert to earlier pages if you accidentally delete something. The only thing we cannot do is retrieve information you typed in if you did not click the SAVE button at the bottom of the page. So remember that the SAVE button is your best friend and the UTK Ask Me team members your second best friends.

If you are here, you know how to access the wiki, so this page just provides basic information and links on how to edit the wiki. Take a look the the Commoncraft YouTube video on how easy it is to use wikis (and not just for education).

Logging In

  1. Before you can edit the wiki, you have to login using the wiki user name (i.e., wikiuser0001, wikiuser0002) and the password that you should find in your registration packet.
  2. Once you have logged in, your are ready to begin editing certain pages of the wiki.

Editable Pages

  1. A few pages, such as the front page of the wiki are locked, so you will not be able to edit that page.
  2. However, most other pages are editable by everyone attending the conference. What we are hoping is that everyone will add content to their own presentation pages.
  3. We have created pages for each presentation at the symposium.

Finding Your Presentation Page

  1. Depending upon your presentation type, click on either Keynotes and General Sessions or Concurrent Sessions and Roundtables.
  2. A new page will open with links to all of the presentations. The pages have already been created for you. You just have to add content.

Basic Editing

  1. To edit the page, click on the EDIT tab on the top left of the page you want to edit.
  2. An editable page will open that you can type on as if it were a word document--what you see is what you get.
  3. You will find many of the same symbols that you find on word processing programs (e.g., bold, underline, italics, font size, headers, bullet and numbered lists).
  4. Type in what you want to add.
  5. Click SAVE at the bottom of the page or you will lose all of your work. Remember to click SAVE.
  6. If you forget to click save, not only will you lose your work, but no one else will be able to edit the page without stealing the lock from you. It is considered poor wiki etiquette to steal a lock, so remember to click SAVE, so others can edit your page also.

Linking to Other Pages

  1. Go into Edit mode.
  2. Find the page you want to connect to and copy the link address.
  3. Click on Add Link in the toolbar at the top of the wiki editing screen.
  4. The small Insert Link box you see below will open.
  5. Click on the Browse Pages & Files link.

  1. Now this page opens. If you want to link to a page or file on the wiki, select pages and files.
  2. If you want to link to another web address, select web address and paste/type in the address. Select open in a new window, so your viewers will not have to use the back arrow to return to the main wiki page.
  3. If you want to add an email address, select email address.
  4. Remember to think about checking the Open in a New Window box.

Advanced Editing

Of course, you can do more than add text to a wiki. You can see that from the ISDLS home page. Click this link for information on how to edit photos with Piknik (which resizes the images and saves space on the wiki) and upload videos to YouTube.

Adding Photos

  1. To add photos to the wiki make sure you are in the edit mode.
  2. On the right-hand side of the wiki, you will will see a column with pages and images and files listed as tabs. The column default is pages (see first image below).
  3. Click on the images and files tab.
  4. Click on upload file.
  5. A Browse window will open (just like adding an attachment to an email message).
  6. Select the image you want to upload.
  7. Click Open and the image will upload.
  8. To add the image to a page, place your cursor on the page where you want the image to be and click on the image. It will upload exactly where your cursor was placed.
  9. If you don't like the placement (and I have put a few photos in strange places), just click on the photo and hit the delete key on your computer and try again. The image stays on the wiki and does not have to be uploaded again.
  10. Remember to click SAVE.

Adding YouTube Videos

Adding YouTube videos is just as easy as adding photos (maybe easier).

  1. Go into Edit mode again.
  2. Click on Insert at the top of the page.
  3. Select Video (see the image below).
  4. Select YouTube. You will need the YouTube URL. Although you have given the option to add the embed code, the embed code doesn't seem to work right now, so just copy the URL (web address) and paste it in the box that appears.
  5. Click next and once the file has uploaded, you should see a green YouTube box. The actual video will not appear until you SAVE the page.

That is it! Do not worry about making mistakes on the Anniversary wiki. The UTK Ask Me can correct any mistake you make by reverting to earlier pages.
